There are some things in sports that make sense and are rational. Then you have things that make absolutely no sense at all: expensive beer, racist mascots, curling as an Olympic sport. I will add Phil Jackson joining the New York Knicks in any capacity to this list.
The reason I’m having such an issue with it is because for Phil Jackson, this is a horrible move. First, the organization is a mess because James Dolan is more interested in headlines and making money than he is with winning. The way he sabotaged Mike Woodson is cause for concern, and any coach worth his salt would be wise to reconsider if offered the position; and that is still the case even if Phil Jackson is running the organization.
Second, Phil’s fiancé lives in Manhattan Beach and runs the Los Angeles Lakers. Although the Lakers are a mess themselves, how in the world would he manage having a significant other in California and he’s running basketball operations in New York? I don’t’ care how much cache Jackson has to his name as a coach, being a general manager or president of basketball operation is a different animal which he has no experience. He can’t do the job through Skype.
Last but not least, Phil Jackson is being set up. What the Knicks are doing is looking for cannon fodder so ownership can have someone else to blame when Carmelo Anthony leaves this summer. They’re not fooling anyone.
Phil Jackson should wait for an opening at the Lakers because eventually they’ll need his assistance to turn that mess around. New York Knicks!?! No way.by
